Opuntia, also known as Prickly Pear Cactus, is a genus of succulent plants renowned for their unique, flattened, paddle-like stems. These versatile cacti are a striking addition to any arid or succulent garden, offering a sculptural silhouette and a touch of the desert's stark beauty. Opuntia species vary widely in size and form, from low-growing ground covers to towering shrubs. Many varieties produce vibrant, showy flowers in shades of yellow, orange, red, or pink, followed by edible fruits known as prickly pears. With their low-maintenance needs and drought-tolerant nature, Opuntia are perfect for xeriscaping, rock gardens, or as a focal point in a sunny landscape.

Arabic Common Name:

تين شوكي (Teen Shoki)

☀️Sunlight: Opuntia thrives in full sun. Place it in a location where it receives at least 6-8 hours of direct sunlight per day. Insufficient light can lead to etiolation (stretching of the stems).

💧Watering: Water thoroughly but infrequently. Allow the soil to dry out completely between waterings. Overwatering is the most common cause of root rot. Reduce watering significantly during the cooler, dormant months.

🌵Soil: Use a well-draining soil mix specifically formulated for cacti and succulents. A mix of sand, perlite, and potting soil works well to ensure proper drainage and prevent waterlogged roots.

🌡️Temperature: Opuntia is very tolerant of high temperatures. Most species are hardy and can withstand a range of temperatures, but they should be protected from freezing temperatures.

✂️Pruning: Pruning is not typically required, but you can remove damaged or unwanted pads with a sharp, clean knife. The pads can be propagated to create new plants.

🐛Pests: Keep an eye out for common pests like mealybugs and scale insects. Treat with an insecticidal soap or neem oil if an infestation occurs.
